When it comes to saving money, there’s one perk of getting older that doesn’t get shouted about nearly enough: the sheer number of discounts, freebies, and special offers out there for over-60s.

From cheaper days out to reduced-price meals and even lower travel fares, there’s a whole world of savings to be had if you know where to look. The trouble is, a lot of these deals fly under the radar, so unless you happen to stumble across them, ask if they offer senior discounts or someone tips you off, you could be missing out.

Best money saving discounts for over 60s

1. Travel for less

Rail travel
If you regularly hop on the train to visit friends or family, head into the city, or take days out, the Senior Railcard is a no-brainer. For just £30 a year (or £70 for three years), you get a third off most rail fares in the UK. That can mean big savings, even on a few longer trips. You can buy it online or at a staffed station, and if you’re booking tickets online, just tick the “Senior Railcard” box to get your discount automatically.

Bus travel
In England, once you reach the state pension age, you’re entitled to a free bus pass for off-peak travel. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it’s even better: You can apply from age 60. This means you can travel on local buses without paying a single penny, which is ideal for shopping trips, appointments, or simply exploring your local area.

Coach travel
Coach companies like National Express offer a Senior Coachcard for just £15 a year, giving you a third off fares and a guaranteed £15 maximum fare for certain journeys. Worth exploring if you don’t drive but want to travel around the UK.

National Trust & English Heritage
If you love visiting historic houses, gardens and beauty spots, the National Trust offers reduced membership for over-60s. You can get a 25% discount if you’ve been a member for at least three of the last ten years. English Heritage also offers concessions at many of its sites, so it’s worth checking when booking tickets.

Cinema tickets
Many cinema chains run “Silver Screen” or “Senior” showings during the week, with heavily discounted ticket prices, sometimes just £3–£4, and often including a free tea or coffee. Odeon Silver Cinema,and Cineworld's CineSeniors are all worth checking out as you’re guaranteed to make savings.

Museums and attractions
Some museums offer over-60s concessions on entry, especially privately run ones. Even big attractions like the Tower of London or Edinburgh Castle sometimes have senior pricing, so always check before you book.
If you’re taking the grandkids to a theme park, always ask if they offer a senior discount, as many will give you a reduced entry price.

3. Eating out for less

You might not know it, but plenty of restaurant chains and pubs quietly offer “senior menus” or meal deals aimed at the over-60s crowd.

Pub chains
Sizzling Pubs, Greene King, and Hungry Horse often run weekday lunchtime deals with smaller portions (and smaller prices), perfect for lighter appetites.

Supermarket cafés

Supermarket savings
While the days of every supermarket offering over-60s discounts are gone, some still run occasional events. Iceland and Food Warehouse run a “Tuesday discount” giving over-60s 10% off. You just need to show proof of you age at the checkout to claim your discount.
It’s worth keeping an eye on supermarket websites or signing up for loyalty cards so you get alerted to these offers.

Specs, hearing aids and health
Specsavers, Boots Opticians, and Vision Express often offer special packages or discounts for over-60s on glasses, lenses, and hearing aids, including money-off frames or two-for-one offers. Over-60s get a free eye test, but you may also be eligible for a voucher towards the cost of your glasses or contact lenses if you are receiving certain benefits. Check with your optician, as they can help you apply for these vouchers.

5. Save on bills and essentials

Council Tax reductions
While there’s no automatic Council Tax discount just for being over 60, you might be eligible for a reduction if you live alone, are on a low income, or receive certain benefits. It’s always worth checking with your local council.

Energy bills
If you receive Pension Credit, you may qualify for the Warm Home Discount, a £150 rebate on your electricity bill. If you are over the State pension age, with an income of £35,000 or less, you should be eligible for the 2025/2026 Winter Fuel Payment.

Water bills
Some water companies offer special tariffs for customers on a low income, which could apply if you’re retired and not working full-time. Contact your supplier to enquire.

Package holidays
Many tour operators and cruise lines offer special over-60s rates. Saga Holidays is specifically aimed at over-50s, with extras like travel insurance and no single supplements on many trips.

Warner Leisure Hotels and Shearings specialise in adult-only breaks, often with over-60s discounts built in. Even camping and caravan parks sometimes offer reduced midweek rates for older guests.

Leisure centres and gyms
Local councils typically run reduced gym or swim memberships for over-60s. In some areas, you can even swim for free at certain times.
Everyone Active, Virgin Active and Total Health all offer over 60s discounts so well worth checking out. Always enquire if you can get a discounted rate at your local gym as often the price of annual memberships can be negotiated.

Learning something new
The University of the Third Age runs low-cost courses, clubs and talks for people no longer in full-time work. Many other Adult education centres may also offer reduced fees for over-60s.

Gardening and DIY
Many garden centres offer discounts for the 60s or the opportunity to join their senior club, giving extra rewards. Always check online or ask at the checkout. Popular Nurseries offer over-60s 10% off every Wednesday and Garden King does the same every Tuesday.

You may have come across the term “death doula” in the news recently, but what does it actually mean, and why are more people seeking one out? The answer might surprise you. In fact, you may already posses many of the qualities needed to become one yourself.

Most of us are familiar with birth doulas, who support families through pregnancy, labour and early parenthood. Death doulas - sometimes called soul midwives or end-of-life doulas - offer a similar kind of presence and guidance, but at life’s final chapter. Over the past decade, their role has been gaining visibility as more people look for compassionate, personalised support around dying, grief and legacy.

What is a death doula?

At its heart, a death doula is a compassionate, trained companion who supports people living with a terminal diagnosis, as well as those closest to them. Whatever a person’s age or stage of illness, a death doula offers calm, steady reassurance. As a non-medical presence, their role is not to treat or cure, but to ensure that someone feels heard, respected and fully themselves right to the very end.

Through emotional, practical and sometimes spiritual support, an end-of-life doula provides continuity during what can be an uncertain and overwhelming time. With empathy, experience and a willingness to listen, they help individuals and families navigate difficult conversations, honour personal wishes and shape a final chapter that feels as peaceful, meaningful and dignified as possible.

Interest in the role has grown significantly in recent years. Emma Clare, chief executive of End of Life Doula UK, says the number of people training to become a doula has increased by 42% between 2023 and 2025. A number of high-profile figures are also said to be exploring training, including Nicole Kidman and Ruby Wax, while presenter Davina McCall has spoken about her intention to qualify when she retires.

What does a death doula do?

"Being a doula is the greatest gift of love. To have a neutral, kind, compassionate, trained and safe stranger walk alongside you during your final days on earth," says Jane O'Riordan, who has been caring for bereaved families for that last seven years and been working as a death doula for the last five.

For Jane, death doulas provide a vital service, bridging the gap between medical and community end-of-life care.

"What’s really important about the doula role is that you meet somebody where they are. We sit and we listen. We hold that space. Once people start to talk, it all comes tumbling out. Over time, you can work out what’s needed for them and their families."

This ‘need’ can cover a huge range of things — from walking dogs and picking up prescriptions to explaining what actually happens to the body when you die, and even arranging the setting and atmosphere someone wants in their final moments.

"Some people want to feel like they're at the beach, so I've set up a sandbox with pebbles, salty water and wave sounds.

"I’ve even worked with someone using a VR headset. He was a scientist in his 90s who wanted to go back to Malaysia to die but was too ill, so we were able to set up that up using virtual reality."

For Jane, having the opportunity to choose how you leave this earth is one of the greatest gifts a doula can give.

"It’s about living well before you take your last breath," she says. "That’s what the doula does. We prepare. You do a birth plan — you choose where you want to give birth, who you want there. Why don’t we do that for dying?"

Death doulas can provide a huge amount of practical support when it comes to filling in forms, arranging GP appointments and helping with the huge amount of death administration, but their physical presence with someone who is taking their last breath can be vital — especially if they're alone.

"I was supporting a doula last night whose client had just died," Jane explains. "She had dreadful lung cancer and didn’t want an oxygen mask over her face — it felt like suffocation. The doctors had given her all the medication possible; she was very agitated. The doula sat with her and said, 'I’m here. I love you. Look into my eyes,' stroking her hand. How amazing that she was able to help her die peacefully. What a gift."

What qualities or skills do you need to become a death doula?

You don't need a medical background to become a death doula. End-of-life doulas come from a wide variety of professions and walks of life, including housewives, carers, teachers, accountants, journalists and nurses. While some have experience in palliative care, counselling or therapy, many transition from completely unrelated corporate careers.
According to Emma Clare, Chief Executive of EOLD UK, the most important qualities of a good death doula include:

• Compassion – showing kindness, empathy and genuine care for people at the end of life and those close to them.

• Calmness under pressure – remaining reassuring and composed during emotional or challenging situations.

• Self-awareness – understanding your own emotions, beliefs and boundaries when supporting others.

• Reflective thinking – being willing to learn from experiences and continually develop your practice.

• Non-judgemental attitude – respecting every person's choices, beliefs, culture and end-of-life wishes.

• Cultural competence – understanding and supporting people from a wide range of backgrounds, faiths and traditions.

• Good listening skills – allowing people to express their fears, hopes and wishes without trying to "fix" them.

• A willingness to learn – being open to training and understanding what it means to support someone who is dying.

Currently, most trained death doulas in the UK are women, but EOLD UK hopes to attract people from more diverse backgrounds to better reflect the communities they support.
Death doula Jane believes many people have already carried out aspects of the role without realising it.
"We've helped neighbours, family or friends navigate grief, sat with someone who was dying, or simply done a food shop for someone caring for a terminally ill loved one."
Jane adds:
"If you like human beings and are prepared to learn what it means to sit with someone who is dying, you are a doula."

How to become a death doula

The first step to becoming a end-of-life doula is become a member of EOLD UK and to do this you must complete a foundation training course with Living Well Dying Well and received their certification.

Membership provides access to a network of peers, continued professional development opportunities, mentorship and essential resources to support your work as a doula.

To work as an EOLD member, you will also need to be DBS checked, follow the Code of Practice and have appropriate insurance.

Emma Clare gave us her advice for anyone looking to start a career as a death doula.

"Firstly I would say do the foundation training which is for anyone who is going to experience death and dying (all of us!) and that will give you a good idea of whether progressing to become an end of life doula is for you.

"Secondly, start working on your own death literacy and competency - attend a Death Cafe, read With the End in Mind by Dr Kathryn Mannix (a great introduction to this area filled with honest stories), and start talking to your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues about death and dying so you can feel whether it is right for you."

How much does a death doula earn?

If you're wanting to earn a large salary, this probably isn't the right job for you. Many death doulas work as volunteers if families can't afford to pay. Typically a death doula will charge around £20 to £45 per hour. Many death doulas work part-time, fitting their care around other jobs. Also remember that you'll have to pay the cost of the training too.

Will more death doulas be needed in the future?

The need for death doulas is only likely to grow in the future as we have an ever more ageing population. The way we live has changed vastly; once upon a time, there would be people in communities who helped women giving birth and likely supported those in death too. We no longer live in close-knit families and villages, and many people are facing death alone as a consequence.

"It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a village to die," says Jane. "We don’t have those villages anymore."

According to public health sociologist Professor Allan Kellehear, seriously ill and dying people spend little more than 5% of their final year of life in the direct care of healthcare services; the other 95% relies on relatives, friends or others without healthcare backgrounds to provide support.

Emma Clare tells me that the ultimate aim of the charity EOLD UK is to work themselves out of being needed.

"We believe that everyone should have this knowledge about how to care for someone who is dying and ideally you wouldn’t need a doula because there would be someone in every household, on every street, who knows what to do."

Why does blood stain so badly?

Blood is mainly made up of protein and water. It is bright red in colour due to having a large number of red pigmented cells and lots of plasma proteins which bind well to clothing and fabrics.
Another explanation as to why bloodstains are so hard to wash out is because of the high levels of iron in blood. Iron is a metal and this is why you'll often be left with a rust-like mark on any fabrics that you've tried to remove a stain from.

Should you use hot or cold water on blood stains?

Never treat blood stains with hot water! Blood is full of proteins as we've explained above and when these proteins are heated up they vibrate until they break the bonds that hold them together, causing the protein to clump. Once this has happened water is no longer able to wash the stain out, causing a permanent stain. You should always use only cold water when cleaning up a bloodstain.

6 expert steps to removing blood stains from a carpet

1. Act quick
"There’s a lot of anxiety around blood stains on carpets, " says Polya Petrova, a kitchen cleaning professional at Fantastic Services. "However, they’re not as complicated to deal with as it’s rumoured. You need to treat them as promptly as possible, because the faster you act, the more effective the method will be."

2. Pre-treat with cold water
"When treating blood stains, always use cold water instead of warm or hot water," says Polya. "Blood coagulates with heat, and the cold will prevent it from permeating into the carpet fibres. Fill a spritzer with 2 tsp of grease-fighting, liquid dish soap and cold water. Spray on the stain. Moisten it liberally so the carpet stain is entirely soaked. Use a paper towel or a dry white cloth to blot (do not rub) the spot so the blood is transferred to the cloth. Rinse with cold water and repeat if necessary. Keep in mind that removing blood stains may take persistence."
Boiling water can also damage carpet fibres, such as synthetics or wool.

3. Use something heavy to soak it up
If the stain is very stubborn you could also try spraying it with the above solution and putting absorbent paper with a weight on top and leaving it for a few hours.

4.  Make your own cleaning mixture
If using dish soap and water hasn't worked you might want to try using something a bit stronger to try and lift the stain.
Paul Hambidge, Managing Director at Factory Direct Flooring, says "If water-based solutions aren't proving effective, small amounts of hydrogen peroxide mixed with bicarbonate of soda or soap are great for lifting blood thanks to their oxidising properties, but make sure to test a small amount of the cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first."

5. Always do a spot test first
Always perform a spot test, just in case, either use an offcut of carpet or try treating an area under the sofa or table that won't be seen. Once you’ve used a cleaning product to lift a stain, use cold, clean water to blot and rinse the carpet.

6. Let the area dry properly
Once you're happy that you're stain has been fully removed it's time to let the carpet air dry.
"You can speed up the process by using fans or patting the area with absorbent towels," says Paul. "Try to avoid walking on the treated area while it's still damp, because this could compress the carpet fibres and affect its overall appearance."
Henrique Conceicao, Area Manager at Total Clean, says when removing a blood stain from a carpet you should never overlook the importance of airflow.
"Once you’ve treated the area, it’s important to get it dry as quickly as possible. A damp carpet can start to smell or even develop mould if it’s left too long, especially if the underlay gets wet. Open windows, switch on a fan, or use a hairdryer on a cool setting to speed things up."

Tom plays Guy, a Customs officer who works at Heathrow alongside his wife, Sophie (Charlotte Ritchie). Although he appears settled - happily married with a daughter at home - Guy feels a growing sense of restlessness. He’s eager to progress in his career and prove himself capable of more, so when the chance to go undercover presents itself, he seizes it as a way to transform his life.

Burke’s character is inspired by a real-life Legend, Guy Stanton, whom creator Neil Forsyth interviewed while developing the series. “I immediately got a sense of the human journey that he and others had taken in this remarkable story,” he says.

As Burke tells Netflix, “His draw to the recruitment poster asking ‘Could you offer more?’ feels quite universal... There’s a feeling that he’s never quite done what he needed to do; a side of him that he’s pushed down, or which has been pushed down by his environment.”

“I always thought [my character’s] drive was more individual and internal, that he simply needs to do something like this because it’s meaningful and purposeful but also because it’s dangerous, and he craves that,” Burke says. “There’s an adrenaline junkie in there somewhere. Perhaps somebody else would just go and do a bungee jump, but he needs a bit more than that. It’s like it’s something he’s got to do to be able to get on with the rest of his life.”

What else has Tom Burke been in?

Tom Burke is one of those actors you’ll instantly recognise, even if you can’t quite place where you first saw him. Over the years, he’s built up an impressive list of roles across both television and film.

If you can’t head out for a walk without a podcast in your ears, or you rely on a bit of ABBA or Motown to keep you going on the treadmill, you’ll know how annoying it is when earbuds keep slipping out.

That’s exactly who the new Beats Powerbeats Fit are designed for. Launched in September 2025, they cost £199 in the UK, so they are definitely an investment.

But are they worth it? We put them through their paces.

First impressions: secure but stylish

The biggest difference here is the soft little wing that tucks gently into the curve of your ear. If traditional round earbuds never quite feel secure, this design feels reassuring from the moment you pop them in.

They come with four ear tip sizes, so you can find the right fit without that uncomfortable blocked feeling. Once they’re in, they stay put, whether you’re brisk walking, gardening, stretching or dashing for the bus.

The charging case is nice and compact too, small enough to slip into a coat pocket or handbag without taking over.

They’re sweat‑resistant as well, which is handy for workouts or warmer weather.

Sound quality: lively and feel‑good

These are classic Beats, which means you get a bold, energetic sound.

Bass is strong and punchy, making pop, dance and feel‑good classics sound full of life. If you rely on a good beat to keep your legs moving, these really help you find your rhythm.

Vocals are not quite as crisp as on some more expensive earbuds, and very high notes can occasionally sound a touch sharp. But for everyday listening such as radio catch‑up, audiobooks, playlists and phone calls, they are more than good enough.

They are about fun rather than studio‑quality perfection.

Noise cancelling: helpful rather than dramatic

The noise cancelling does a decent job of softening background hum. It is useful on trains, buses or if the washing machine is whirring away nearby.

It will not completely block out the world, but it certainly takes the edge off. There is also a transparency mode, so you can stay aware of traffic or hear announcements without taking them out.

Comfort over time

For everyday use, they are very comfortable. On longer listening sessions, you might start to feel slightly aware of the wingtip, but that is the trade‑off for the secure fit. And they really do stay put, which is the whole point.

Battery life and everyday use

Battery life is strong enough to last several days of casual listening before you need to reach for the charger.

If you use an iPhone or iPad, pairing is beautifully simple. Just open the case and follow the prompt. Switching between Apple devices is smooth too.

Final verdict

At £199, the Beats Powerbeats Fit are not an impulse buy, and they are not trying to be the most technical or feature‑packed earbuds on the market. What they offer instead is reassurance. They fit securely, genuinely stay in place when you are walking or exercising, and deliver a lively, bass‑forward sound that makes everyday listening feel upbeat and motivating.

You miss out on some of the newer fitness extras and the very latest audio tech, but for many people that will not matter. If you simply want a comfortable, reliable pair of earbuds that are easy to use, work seamlessly with Apple devices and will not pop out mid‑stride, these are a solid and confidence‑boosting choice. For fun, fuss‑free listening that keeps up with an active lifestyle, they do the job very nicely.

Launched on 4 June 2026, these are Shokz’s latest clip‑on, open‑ear earbuds. Instead of sitting inside your ear canal, they gently clip around your ear, leaving it open. The idea? You can enjoy your music or podcasts and still hear traffic, the doorbell or your friend chatting beside you.

Design: light, clever and surprisingly chic

First impressions? They’re rather lovely. Reviewers have described them as almost jewellery‑like , and I can see why. They don’t have that bulky “sports tech” look – more a neat little cuff that sits neatly over your ear.

Comfort is a real highlight. The soft silicone and flexible nickel‑titanium “JointArc” design mean there’s no uncomfortable pinch . In fact, they’re so light you can forget you’re wearing them – ideal if you like to listen for hours while pottering, working or walking the dog.

If you wear glasses, you’ll also appreciate that they don’t interfere in the way some over‑ear hooks can.

One clever touch is Dynamic Ear Detection, which means there’s no left or right bud to worry about – pop either one on either ear and they automatically adjust . It’s a small thing, but wonderfully practical.

That said, because they clip on rather than hook securely over the ear, they can be knocked loose by an accidental brush of your hand or a hood. Fine for most day‑to‑day wear, but something to bear in mind if you’re forever pulling jumpers over your head.

And if you’re someone who listens in bed? They’re not ideal for side‑sleeping – the clip design makes it tricky to lie comfortably on one side.

Sound: fuller and bassier than you’d expect

Open‑ear headphones have traditionally meant compromising on sound quality – especially bass. Shokz has worked hard to change that here.

The OpenDots 2 feature Bassphere™ 2.0, upgraded Dolby Audio and MirrorPitch™ technology, all designed to deliver clearer, richer sound with less distortion. In real‑world reviews, they’ve been praised for a fuller sound and impressive clarity at higher volumes.

For open earbuds, the audio quality is genuinely impressive, with great clarity and a solid bass foundation. You’re not going to get the deep, rumbling thump of over‑ear noise‑cancelling headphones, but for walking, running or working at home, they're perfect.

Do remember: these are not noise‑cancelling. In a quiet office or on a country walk, that’s perfect. On a noisy train or plane, they can get drowned out . But for running, I actually love that you can still hear what’s going on around you – it feels much safer.

Calls: clearer conversations

If you regularly take calls on the go, the OpenDots 2 step things up. They use a dedicated bone‑conduction microphone plus two air‑conduction mics, along with AI noise reduction.

In testing, call quality was reported as clear, even in noisy environments . It may not replace a professional headset, but for everyday chats and family calls, it does the job very well.

Controls and practicality

The controls are easy and intuitive. You can tap or use a force‑sensor pinch gesture to play, pause, skip tracks or adjust volume. Once you’ve got the hang of it, it feels very natural.

They also come with IP57 water resistance for the earbuds , meaning they can cope with sweat, rain and dust – ideal for brisk walks or runs. (Just don’t go swimming in them, and remember the case isn’t waterproof.)
