Subtle changes hint at the gentle shift of the seasons, from the mellowing of the sun’s rays to the deepening colours of gem-like blooms. Summer may be bowing out, but golden days still invite exploration of a wooded haven studded with towers and a rural waterway tumbling unfettered once more through its rural terrain.

Gorgeous gardening

In a quiet corner of rural Norfolk, medlar grower Jane Stewart is plucking fruit with a peculiar charm. Once a staple of the medieval diet, these curvaceous pickings are made into jelly and chutney at her Eastgate Larder for all to enjoy. In borders, late-flowering Michaelmas daisies shine like stars, and the smooth skin of pearlescent pumpkins catches the light in outdoor arrangements. Logs add a rustic feature to gardens where tiny creatures can thrive among the wood piles.

Inspirational cookery

Seasonal favourite, the nutty, sweet butternut squash takes centre stage in a variety of dishes to share round the October table, and an informal twist on a Sunday roast is also perfect for a gathering of friends or family. For a sticky, chewy treat with added crunch, golden flapjacks are the perfect pairing with a relaxing cuppa.

Britain's rich heritage

Sitting in the heart of Eryri National Park, the village of Beddgelert may be small, but it is vast in atmosphere. Surrounded by grandeur, mountains alongside a shimmering lake guard this Welsh settlement, which is rich in myths and legends. Also woven with history is Harris Tweed; a prestigious cloth made by the traditional way by generations on the remote Outer Hebrides.

Exquisite craft

Passing a skill from father to son, family business Rudd’s Rakes, in North Cumbria, sees craftsman Graeme making the large wooden implements once used in hay-gathering but now keeping lawns and other surfaces pristine. A Simple craft project gives an old wooden mug tree is given a new lease of life with a slick of paint, and woodland treasures are used to make soft, felted acorn and walnut decorations.
