Sultry days bring summer to its heady heights before the rich colours of the countryside begin to soften. Rising from a leafy basin in Hertfordshire, an ivy-clad Victorian water tower adds magic to a storybook sanctuary filled with vibrant, free-spirited plantings. August borders dance as the slender stems of tasselled sanguisorbas are touched by the breeze, and a quirky feature can be upcycled from a teapot twist on a hanging basket.

Inspirational cookery

Bold flavours, with a spicy chilli kick, bring vibrance and warmth to the table in a variety of dishes, while, in contrast, the refreshing taste of watermelon bursts with delicately sweet juice in both savoury combinations and fresh desserts. A golden loaf cake offers a slice of sunshine, with its buttery sponge infused with mellow honey and fragrant thyme.

Britain's rich heritage

Perched between moorland and sea sits the cliffside North Yorkshire village of Robin Hood’s Bay; its clusters of red roofs tumbling down characterful steep lanes to a horseshoe bay. And in a wide, open Sussex valley, centuries-old crafts and daily rituals are recreated under oak- beamed, thatched buildings at the fascinating Weald & Downland Living Museum.

Exquisite craft

Make simple crafts such as plump pompom cherries from yarn and felt to pin on a beach bag or shopper, or to gift to friends and family. Also synonymous with the time of year, the dragonfly is inspiration for dainty, easy-to-fashion, beaded decorations that glisten in the sunlight. Fulsome wreaths create colourful adornments outdoors and on the wild isle of Orkney, Kevin Gauld harvests his own straw to made traditional, tall-backed crofters’ chairs for when the weather turns.
